Annoying Armoire Part 1

Oh what a pain this project has been!  This has been one of those projects where nothing works like I want it to.  It literally drove me crazy! But... I do love the outcome!  Today I will be showing you the top half.

Now this is the part where I would typically start showing the before pictures but I can't find them which makes me think that I never took them!  Sorry.  Let me explain though.  This was originally a cherry wood highboy armoire with brass hardware.  It was in great shape... it just needed to be shantied up a bit!

I removed the brass hardware.

and painted it with Rust-Oleum Hammered Brown Spray Paint.

That is the only before pic you guys get... :( Sorry!

I then painted the entire piece with Olympic Off White satin paint.  I had intended on spray painting but this baby did not take spray paint well.... yet another bump in the road.  The piece looked very similar to this one but it has doors on the front.

After that dried I replaced all my newly painted hardware and also found these really cute knobs at Hobby Lobby for the door pulls.

I lightly sanded the edges.  I wanted a slightly cleaner look for this piece so I passed on glazing... I know... Shock!  I used a 3M sanding block with 80 grit paper to do my sanding on the edges and love the subtle look it achieved...

So this is where it is parked for the moment... in my living room.  This is supposed to be upstairs but my hubby recently injured his back in a horse accident so now I just get to walk around it. (another bump)

I do love it though and I can't wait to show you guys the bottom half and the final piece put together.  I will share that with you soon and also show you where I will be putting it.  In the meantime, enjoy the top half!

Thanks so much guys!!

~Whitney

You're so brave with paint! The thought of painting my real big people furniture (as opposed to something that I'm considering sending to Goodwill anyway) makes my heart start to race. Plus I think if I painted any of it, my husband would wet his pants. That's before asking me what the heck I was thinking, of course.

cute cute cute. I love what a little paint can do. I am more of a dark wood stain kind of girl but the painting thing is growing on me.

It looks great! I had one of those this summer, a project that just about sent me over the edge, a table with 6 leaves and 8 chairs. Nearly sent me over the edge.

I really love the top part with the scrolly look. (Is scrolly a word?)
I have a question...
How do you decide whether you want to put the antique glaze on something or not? I am so bad at making color decisions.

Looks great and I agree it takes guts to paint "the real furniture". lol And I love those knobs...I just bought the exact same ones for a cabinet in my computer room. They are sooo cute.

Great Job!

This looks great - I can't wait to see the whole thing when it's finished. I love painting furniture and am currently painting two dressers for a friend who was going to chuck them away and buy painted ones for a million pounds each (slight exaggeration)from Laura Ashley. My dining table is never dressed nicely as it's always covered in bits I'm painting. My husband says he's scared to sit still for long in case I paint him too!

Okay... here's a duh question:

Did you sand the piece before painting?

Our bedroom furniture was my husbands grad present from his folks and not my taste in color... But I think painting it would be fun. However, I hate sanding!! LOL

It takes a lot of courage to paint furniture. It did turn out great. I can't wait to see it placed in it's final home. You should post it on my Bedscape party every Tueday starting Feb. 9.

Beautiful, Whitney! Love the hardware you added. I have an armoire on my list to do and I'm not looking forward to it. I'm sure it will be, at the least, a weekend affair!

I believe we bought the same one, lol, I am so tired of my cherry furniture and want to do it shabby chic. My husband will kill me (well, not really, but he will want to.) wouldn't be the first time tho. He always loves how things I do come out but during the transition he is a pain in the a..

That turned out really pretty and I love the knobs. Thanks for sharing...come say hi sometime.

It turned out great! Wish we had a HobLob here in Cali - those knobs are too cute.
And you used Olympic wall paint?!? Wow - I'm overthinking my projects waaay too much.
I have tons of wall paint and loads of salvaged junk/furniture. I need to just jump in and get painting!

Love your blog! You do some real cute work. I want to redo our bedroom dressers. I was planning on painting them white and distressing them and then putting a glaze over them but I've never done this before. They are a honey finish right now. How come you spray painted yours brown first? Is that so that when you sanded the edges that is what you wanted to see? Also...If I want to do a glaze would I paint it brown, then white, then sand it/distress it, and then put the glaze on...or does the glaze go on before the sanding and distressing...I need help!! Hope to hear from you!

Whitney-
did you sand the finish down on this piece at all before you painted it with satin paint? I am going to redo my dinning room furniture and want to do it right since my husband thinks I am completely crazy and swears I am going to mess it up! He has no vision of what things can look like Shantied up a bit!
