Ashley's Snowflake Ornament

Hi all!  First off, I want to say thank you to all of you who rated our project online today!  Wow!!!!  You guys are really helping us out!!!!  Thanks so much!!!!!  Now for my latest project!  I've mentioned that early Christmas decorating is a family tradition going way back!  We have always put the trees up right after Halloween and it feels right to me!  So here I am again, early November decorating my Christmas Tree!

I had to start from scratch this year because ALL of our ornaments were strewn across Hwy 114 on moving day (note to self ~ do not put a lightweight rubbermaid container in the bed of a truck).  Thankfully they were of no sentimental value!  I was going to revamp them anyway to match my new color scheme!

Here is the first of the replacements!

I'm sure you all have these!

Pair it with a bunch of cream colored buttons and a hot glue gun!

Cut 6 long and 6 shorter pieces using a pair of wire cutters

and hot glue each piece around a large button alternating sizes.

more hot glue....

and sandwich the wires with another large button.

Glue the buttons to each wire creating a pattern...

and flip!  Copy the same pattern on the reverse side.

Now for the hangin'

Use a strand of 1ply jute twine and glue it between the top two buttons to hide the edge

and coil up to the tip of the wire.

Tie a knot at the top creating a loop for hanging.

Now that was painless!!!!

Can't wait to hang it from my tree!!!

I have added these to our Etsy shop ~ The Shanty Shoppe ~ Where they are available for purchase!  Stop by and check them out!!!!

Whitney's Tin Ornament

Hello everyone!! Hope everyone is having a great week!!  It finally dropped below 80 hear in Texas so it is officially time to start preparing for Christmas:)  I don't quite have my tree up yet but I am in the process of making and revamping ornaments for it.  My first one... this super cute baby right here...

Want to see how I made it???  Ok!

I started by cutting some of that great tin roof flashing I found at Lowe's the other day.  My tool of choice... My Sizzix machine!  I have not pulled mine out in ages but when thinking about what fun projects I could do with this metal, my Sizzix came to mind.  I did have to run it throught the rollers a few more times than usual to get it cut all the way through.

After doing that I started cutting my wood.  I found a 1/4" board at Lowe's and I cut a small 4" piece using my hand saw.

I then drilled a small hole on the top...

Time for paint... My favorite ever... Rustoleum American Accents Heirloom White spray paint.  This only took 1 coat.

I shantied it up a bit... Using my 3M block sander with 80 grit paper.

I added a little bit of Minwax Dark Walnut stain to my edges...

I then added my glaze... Ralph Lauren Smoke Glaze.  You just paint it on and wipe it off... LOVE!

My next step was to attach my cute metal piece.  I used a dab of hot glue in the center and then nailed the edges just to shanty it up a bit more.

I added a bit of twine and I was done.  I wanted to share before it made it to the tree so I took some pictures for you guys...

You like??  I will also be offering these in our Shanty Shoppe.  You can get there by clicking HERE or by using the button on our sidebar.  Thanks so much for stopping by!!!  I love hearing from all of you:)

I will be linking up at WFMW at We are that Family!!!

Ashley's Corner Hutch Shanty

UPDATE~
We will be linking up at this great party!!

and at WFMW at We are that Family!!

Hi all!  Hope you are all fantastic!  I haven't posted much in the past week because I have been pouring my blood, sweat and tears into this piece!!!

It may be hard to believe but it once looked like this!

This is a piece from our game room.  There is nothing wrong with it but my boys are getting older and I really want the room to have a more mature look.  This hutch fits great in the corner however, the yellow, blue and sports decor didn't fit with the picture I had in my mind...

I started by taking the cabinet doors off and cutting the wooden sport decals out of the doors.  I used my Ryobi battery powered circular saw to start, then Whit's hand saw to tackle the hard-to-reach spots and finished off with a good sanding to smooth the edges.

Enough of the elbow grease....let's paint!

I used a Shanty Sisters fav ~ Rustoleum American Accents Canyon Black spray paint all over ~ 2 coats and quickly moved on to the detailing.

I measured and cut pieces of burlap to fit on the inside walls of the hutch.  Next, I hot glued the edges down to form nice seams on all sides (my hot glue gun is my best friend seeing as I do not know how to sew ~ she gets'er done!!!!

When the burlap was ready, I sprayed Elmer's Spray Adhesive on the inside corner of the hutch and used a ruler to smooth the center of the burlap all the way down the corner.

I then pulled the burlap tight to the edges and placed several small tacks behind the outer edges.

Nice...

Next, I pushed the pegs through the burlap into the holes...

and placed the newly painted shelves back in their spots.

Now she's starting to come around...

I continued the same steps all the way up to the top.

Now for the impact detailing!

I used my 3M sanding block to distress all of the edges and corners...

and hot glued 4ply jute twine on the bottom edges of each shelf to give a more finished touch to the burlap!

One final important piece!

I cut down a piece of molding to fit the top of the hutch...

gave it a good spray down with our fav Canyon Black...

turned the hutch on her belly and attached the molding to the front using Gorilla Glue Epoxy!

Next, I attached the cabinet doors and finished her off with a cute set of knobs that I purchased at Hobby Lobby!

What was once this....

Is now a chic piece of furniture that I can display in any part of our home!

I'll leave her in the gameroom for now but who knows....she may make it around the house a few times!  I'm so happy with my new corner hutch and it has given me just the motivation I need to start decorating our gameroom!!!!

Don't forget to check out our new Etsy shop ~ The Shanty Shoppe ~ We have a ton of fun goodies available for purchase!!!!

I will also be posting this at Cottage Instincts for I made it with what I had!!

Ashley's Christmas Apothecaries

Happy Saturday friends!!!!  So, I promised I would get back to you on my Christmas decorating ideas for my apothecary jars and I am keeping my promise!!!  I just love Christmas so I couldn't wait to dress these babies in their Holiday best!

The how to on the style!

I purchased one bag of snow flakes at Hobby Lobby...

and a bucket of silver ornaments from Wal-Mart (I will use the leftovers for my tree...yay for multiple uses!)

I poured a little bit of snow in each apothecary, picked my favorite ornaments from the bucket and stacked two in the tall apothecary and one in each of the other two.

Hey...when you live in Texas you have to make your own Winter Wonderland!!!

Ahh!  I love the simplicity!!!!  If you missed the tutorial on the apothecaries you can see it HERE!

Don't forget to stop by our new Etsy shop ~ The Shanty Shoppe ~ where we have these and many other shanties available for purchase!!!!  You can go HERE to visit or click on the Shanty Shoppe button on our sidebar!!!  Happy shopping!!

Whitney's Magnetic Recipe Holder

UPDATE~
We will be linking up at this great party!!

and WFMW at We are that Family!!!

Hey guys!!  My next project was inspired by my recent love of magnets and galvanized tin.  I decided to create a recipe holder for my kitchen!!

It's a cutie!... This is what I did...

I purchased a 1x8x4 at Lowes and a large square dowel...

I also purchased a small craft circle...

My first step was to cut the dowel.  I cut it about 11" long.  I then used my Gorilla Glue Epoxy to attach the dowel to my wood circle.

I then cut my 1x8 10" long.  I used the epoxy to attach the 1x8 piece to the front of the dowel.

Then I let it dry a bit...

I used my drill to put a hole in the top for the finial.

And here is was ready for paint!!!

I painted that with Rustoleum American Accents Heirloom White spray paint.  After that was dry I started working on the next step.

I decided to shanty the edges up a bit with my sander and a bit of Minwax Dark Walnut stain...

I then added a bit of Ralph Lauren Smoke Glaze... You guys know the routine!!

I found this galvanized roof flashing at Lowe's...

I cut a piece just a bit smaller than the plaque I attached to the dowel.

I then used my epoxy again to attach the metal to the plaque to the wood piece. I added a silver nail in each
corner for a bit of shanty-ness!!

Now for my magnets... I used the same super cute Fleur-de-lis wood pieces that Ash used on a previous procect.  I painted and glzed them the same and then used some Gorilla Glue to attach the magnets.

All finished... Now it just needs a great recipe...

It also makes a great picture holder...

What do you think??!  This will be our newest addition to the Shanty Shoppe on Etsy.  After several requests we decided to start offering some of our shanties on Etsy.  You can visit us by clicking on the Shanty Shoppe button on our sidebar or by clicking HERE!!!

Shanty Spotlight ~ Beneath My Heart

Hey Guys!!  So we wanted to introduce you all to our very first Shanty Spotlight...

Her name is Traci!  She has an amazing blog... Beneath My Heart

We have been inspired by many of her posts and asked her to share some of her goodness with you guys.  Please lavish her with comments:)!!  She has done well...

You can visit her blog and see what she's all about HERE!!

Hello everyone!

My name is Traci, and I am so excited to be Shanty2Chic’s first “Shanty Spotlight”! I am the mother of four terrific little boys and the wife of a loving (and super handy) husband.

I became a follower of Shanty2Chic when the Shanty sisters first started a few months ago, and I have enjoyed all of their wonderful projects.

So when they asked me to be a guest on their blog, of course, I was honored. I wanted to pick a project to share with you that was truly “shant-y-licious”. So I decided to share my recent chair re-do.

Check this out!

IMG_3128

I got this chair at Goodwill for $6.50.

Now this poor little chair could definitely be called “Shanty”, don’t ya think?

But I looked past that and saw the potential for it to become truly “Chic”.

Here’s what I did…

First of all, I decided to paint the chair black. I used Valspar spray paint in satin from Lowe's.

Then I used a fine grit sandpaper to sand down the edges a bit.

As you can tell by the picture below, I left the chair in my garage too long without supervision.

One of my boys thought it would be fun to tear the material off the chair, thus the result…

IMG_3908

Oh my, that is reeeeeally “shanty”!

But I didn’t let that stop me. I still had my vision…

The chair now needed a little more cushion to it, so I used my staple gun to apply some extra batting to the seat and back of the chair.

IMG_3909

Now it was ready to cover with my material.

Of course, I chose burlap. My current obsession!

I started with the seat, using my staple gun to secure the burlap.

IMG_3910

I cut the fabric around the arms of the chair, folded it under, and then stapled it down. (This part was not easy, and it did not turn out perfectly, but it still looks good to me!)

IMG_3911

IMG_3912

When I saw the extra burlap hanging below the staples, it looked like a cute little ruffled skirt. That’s when I decided that I wanted to add a skirt to the chair. (The above pictures were taken at night in my garage, so the burlap looks darker.)

Next, I covered the back of the chair using the same process as I did on the seat.

IMG_3943

Then I stapled and trimmed the burlap on the back of the chair.

IMG_3947

Next, I stapled on a piece of burlap to cover the back of the chair.

IMG_3948

Now for the skirt…

I placed the cording in the middle of the burlap, folded the material over, and sewed it up using my zipper foot. Then I trimmed the excess material.

IMG_3913

Notice I didn’t even use pins when I sewed. I’m dangerous like that!

IMG_3914

I made a long piece of burlap that measured 5 inches wide and sewed a small hem. Then I pinned some ruffles in the material. I didn’t even measure them the same length apart. I just eyeballed it. That’s how I roll.

IMG_3926

I attached the cording to the skirt, and sewed them together.

IMG_3927

IMG_3928

I made some double cording and hot glued it over the staples on the back. (I will be explaining how to make the double cording in a future post on my blog.)

IMG_4071

Then I attached the skirt with my staple gun.

I bought this chair for $6.50.

I bought about 4 yards of burlap from Hobby Lobby when it was on sale for $1.99 a yard. That’s $8.00, and I have some left over.

I already had the black spray paint, cording, and staples. So this whole “shanty to chic” transformation cost me about $15.00!

I’m loving that!

For a little extra “chic-ness”, I made a little pillow to go with it.

This picture was taken in our master bedroom, but I made the chair to go in our guest house.

Here it is in our guest house…

IMG_4152

Well, there you have it!

My shanty…. to chic!

IMG_3128 IMG_4150

Thanks for letting me share my project, and please come visit me at my blog, Beneath My Heart, for more furniture makeovers, crafty projects, and of course, a bunch of burlap creations!

Blessings,

We will be linking this up to the Shabby Chic Cottage for Transformation Thursday!
