A Satisfied Customer...

Hey guys!! Our cousin is getting married next month and he recently asked for my help with a table revamp.  His fiance that we love found this table on Craig's List for $100.

Please excuse my garage... It's a bit shanty! This was a great table. It's solid oak and has great traditional lines... It was just in need of a little updating!  It also came with a leaf.

I opened the table up and set the leaf inside leaving a bit of space on each side.  I used Behr black satin interior paint.  I never pick a color card.  Just tell the paint guy or gal that you want black.  I cleaned the top off just a bit and painted the entire piece.  Here it is drying.

I then used my 3M block sander with 80 grit paper to sand my edges a bit.  I LOVE the results!

My cousin added the topcoat of Polyurethane by himself when he got it home.  I am hoping they will soon share a picture of it in the house but for now these will have to do!  For less than $25 I took this old orange looking table and turned it into something fabulous!  We are constantly getting questions about revamping kitchen tables and I hope this inspires you guys to go for it! It is so worth it!!

And there's my satisfied customer!!

Congratulations Justin and Shannon!!

  1. OOOh, I love it!!! Makes me sick and sad though, my mother offered to give me a beautiful dining room set. I declined the offer because it just wasn't my style, it was that ugly orange looking wood. It had a long rectangular table and a beautiful hutch with glass doors. My dad had bought it for her about 30 years ago. Why didn't I keep it and paint it like this table??? I am kicking myself now.Who would have thought that black painy could make something look so beautiful!!!

  2. I love how a little paint goes a long way! I have a kitchen table that looks very similair to this table, but it is painted black and has a factory finish on it. I want to paint it white, but do I need to sand down the finish or strip the paint or anything? I'm new at revamping :) Thanks!

  3. The table looks great! I have loved my kitchen table I painted and refinished
. It is all about the products you use for the top-coat to make it durable. Especially with something that will be used a-lot. Love it girls!

  4. The table looks great. I have the same question as Jordan - did you sand it down at all? Or strip or prime?

I am sure they are super happy with the new table.

BTW, you mentioned Lubbock in a previous post - I was born and raised there & a Red Raider too boot (though a full fledged Coloradan now...)!!

  9. Love it! Two questions. How do you decide if you're going to spray paint a piece or hand paint? And also what does the polyurethane do? Make it shiny? Thanks. I absolutely love your site. You girls come up with the most amazing things.

  17. I have a question too! I have a black table that has been handed down to me. It was brown at one point I am sure... it was painted white and then black. The black is chipping off everywhere. I want to redo this table bad.
Would you recommend sanding it down? If so is there an easier why to sand an entire table?

  19. I SO needed this post! We just bought an oak entertainment wall unit that I am planning on painting black and my dh & I were just discussing paint options (satin vs. glossy) hand, roller, or spraying with our paint sprayer etc. and whether or not to "age" it. Thanks for all the great ideas!

  20. Table looks fantabulous! I have one very similar that I am dying to do that too. It belonged to my dad's mother, and it was in their family forever. He and my mom had and cut it down for a coffee table. Now I have it. Great solid oak. Nice job!

  30. I love it! I never think of doing stuff like this! I hated the old rocking chair my MIL gave me for the nursery because of the color of the old wood, but you've inspired me to do something with it....add paint!

  32. It's beautiful. Would you pls. share with me the paint brand that you find works best. And do you seal your projects. I just bought 6 beauties today at the thrift store (which I too blogged about today) and I'm getting ready to do some extreme makeovers. I haven't been pleased with my last couple of paints that I've used. Thanks so much!

  36. my dear sweet husband turns into the "big bad wolf" when I mention/discuss (well, try to discuss) painting anything that is solid wood. he is a retired carpenter. loves, loves, loves wood. for the life of himself he cannot understanding anyone wanting to paint a solid piece of wood. his answer to this, if you don't like the oak piece, then sell it and buy an unfished pine piece and paint away....i'm afraid there's no changing him. I LOVE what you did with the "solid oak" table. but, i don't plan on sharing your beautiful finished product with my hubby.

  45. I'm getting ready to do my own round kicthen table soon and I was also wanting to paint it black, the chairs will be cream with black numbers on the backs of the chairs. This will be my first time painting a table. I hope it turns out as good as yours!

  46. I am wondering the exact same thing as all the other commentors, did you sand the table, strip it, or did you just paint it? Could you please let us know. I have a table almost exactly like this one and would love to redo it by painting it an antique white or cream. By the way, I love your blog.
