The Chalkboards are UP!!!!

Well, the chalkboards are UP!  I spent today finishing up some projects and one of them was to get these suckers up on the walls!  I think I am more in love with the way I chose to hang them than the chalkboards themselves:)

Have you ever seen these massive unfinished wooden clips at Hobby Lobby and wondered what the heck you could do with them because they are so darn cute? 

Well I have many times as I stroll down the unfinished wood isle.  Then it hit me!  I finally had a purpose for them!

I disassembled them, spray painted them with Rustoleum American Accents Heirloom White...

and distressed the edges with my 3M Sanding Block (80 grit sandpaper).

Next I painted on Minwax Red Mahogany to the newly sanded edges...

gave them some Ralph Lauren Smoke Glaze love (paint on/wipe off) and put them back together again!

Ahh!  I love them and they are ready to be put to use!

Time to hang!

I put 2 large saw tooth hangers at the top corners of each chalkboard...

used my handy dandy Easy Tacker to staple the ends of two pieces of twine to the top corners

and pulled the center up to a point!

Now for the cute part!

I also added saw tooth hangers to the back of each clip, hung them both up on the wall and clamped them down on the top of the twine!

The completed Rustic Chalkboards!  As you can see they are already being put to good use!  (NOTE: the chalkboard is hanging on the wall not from the clips!)

I love the way the chalkboards turned out and they really are a strong focal point in their rooms!  I think the clips add such a great custom twist and compliment the rustic feel of the boards!  If you missed my tutorial on the Rustic Chalkboards you can see it HERE!

Ashley's Rustic Chalkboard

Hi all!  I want to share the fun project(s) I have been working on this week!  This is actually a project for my boys and I love how they turned out! 

This story starts with a chalk board that I made for a friend a few weeks ago.  Both of my boys were very upset that it wasn't for them so I promised them I would make one for each of them to hang in their rooms.  Well, let me say that they reminded me daily until today!  They are COMPLETE!

I started off with a 2x4 piece of hardboard that I purchased at Home Depot for $5.  I used my DeWalt battery powered circular saw to saw it in half which made two 2x2 chalkboards.  I then sprayed each one with Rustoleum Chalkboard Spray Paint.

Now to frame them!

I found several fence panel slats in our garage...a couple were nice clean cedar slats leftover from previous projects but most of them were shanty like these two!  Shanty but FREE!

I sanded the muck off with my DeWalt battery powered sander.

Next I marked points to cut....

and zipped the ends off with the circular saw.

I painted 2 coats of Behr Forever Black on each panel.

and used Gorilla Glue Epoxy to secure the panels in place.  Let me tell you this stuff is like cement (which is great for rough little boys)!

Of course I had to personalize them!  I used my Cricuit to make stencils and dry brushed their names in Antique White Acrylic.

All together I was able to make two chalkboards for under $3 each!  Not too shanty and my boys LOVE them!  I can't wait to show you how I hang them in their rooms!

Whitney's Iron Wall Decor Revamp

Hey guys!  I bought this iron wall plaque in Canton several years ago.  I had two of them and they were in my bathroom at my old house.  When we moved into our new home I found a new place to put it... under my bed:)  I was just a bit "over it".  I was just kind of sick of seeing it... know what I mean??

I have a big blank space over my bed at the moment and remembered this poor thing hiding under the bed.  I decided that I could jazz it up a bit, add a little character and repurpose it!  Here's what I did...

I started by purchasing a few things to add to it...

Yet another metal scrolly thing... at Hobby Lobby for $4...

And 4 little wood scrolly things also from Hobby Lobby for $3.00.

I used my Gorilla Glue Epoxy for this project...

For those of you that are unfamiliar with this product I want to share a few tips I have learned about it...

~It has the consistency of hot glue... not runny and thin like super glue... Yeah!

~ You have about 5 minutes of play time until it dries... yeah again!

~ It is a very permanant hold... Woohoo!

~It is a bit stinky but so worth it with all those other pros!!

I just squeezed a bit out on some foil and mixed it with the end of a plastic fork... how's that for shanty;)!!

I put the GG epoxy on the areas where the little scrolly would touch the wall plaque...

Then I attached them!

I gave my little wood scrollies a coat of brown acrylic paint so that they would distress in a similar color to the iron.  I then used the epoxy and attached them as well to each end.

After letting that dry I gave the entire piece several coats of my fav... Rustoleum American Accents Heirloom White spray paint.  Most of the cheap, mass-produced iron pieces I have bought do require more coats of paint... not really sure why!

After letting that dry it was time to distress! I used my tool of choice... my 3M sanding block with 80 grit paper.  I just rubbed the block over all my edges and my scrollies.

And when I was finished it looked like this...

Don't you think it needs a little something???  Me too! I used my Ralph Lauren smoke glaze to bring out all those new fun lines I just added.  Just paint it on and wipe it off with a cloth.

After letting that dry a bit it was time to find it's new time... this time not under the bed:)!

I can't wait to see all the fantastic Gorilla Glue projects for the party coming up!!  If you have not finished yours yet this would be a great time to go get some of that epoxy... this stuff does not disappoint!  Don't forget to grab the button below!!
